Preparing Your Furnace for the Winter

Tips for Preparing Your Heating System for the Winter

As the winter approaches, temperatures will continue to drop. That means that we will begin to swap out our air conditioning for our heating. In the peak of winter, temperatures can drop down into the high 40s. That is quite frigid, and you will need your furnace or heat pump to warm you up. However, it has been sitting there dormant during the summer months and can benefit from some maintenance to prepare it for the winter. Some tips for preparing your furnace for the winter include:

  • Clean Air Vents/Registers: It is common for dust to get stuck in and clog your air vents and registers. Be sure to clean them to ensure there is sufficient airflow for your heating system to take in air and redistribute it.

  • Move Nearby Objects: Before you turn on your heating system, be sure to move objects that are close to or on it. This will prevent fires from occurring and allow adequate airflow.

  • Replace Furnace Air Filter: Air filters get clogged all the time. They trap dirt, dust, pet hair, and more to prevent it from getting into your ductwork. When they get clogged, they do not allow enough airflow into your furnace which causes it to work harder to heat your home.

  • Make a Heating Maintenance Appointment: You are going to need your furnace functioning in peak condition when it gets cold outside. Schedule a heating repair appointment with your local HVAC company for them to inspect your furnace and ensure everything is in working order.

Did you know that the condition of the ductwork inside of your home has a direct impact on the quality of the air you'll be breathing in while in your home? Air ducts are a critical component of your HVAC system as they are the vents that carry the hot or cool air through your home. If these are neglected, your HVAC system won't run efficiently and could cause further problems. The quality of your air will decrease and more wear and tear could occur on your HVAC. There are some signs to watch out for indicating you need AC duct repairs including: Dusty Vents- If your air vents are covered in dust, this is a clear sign you may be in need of AC duct repairs. Strange Noises - If you notice popping, banging, or booming sounds when you turn on your AC, there is most likely an issue with your ductwork. Excess air pressure, poorly fitted ducts, and more are all issues that can occur. Poor Air Flow- Reduced airflow with your AC unit could be due to a crack, tear, or broken seal within the ductwork. Essentially less air is reaching the vent and getting pushed out. Moldy Smells- Mold will grow where there is excess moisture and humidity. When you turn on your AC unit and notice a moldy odor, it could be due to poorly insulated ductwork or a leak in the ductwork. Differences in Temperature- If you notice different temperatures throughout your home, it could be due to clogged ducts, an air leak, and other factors. Higher Energy Bill- When you notice a spike in your energy, take a look at your HVAC and ductwork system as an issue here could be driving up the cost.

A good routine to get into is getting your A/C, heater, or HVAC unit checked every year to determine if it needs any repairs. Being proactive about these repairs will help you keep your heating and cooling systems lasting for years to come. Here are a few benefits of keeping up with your heater and A/C repairs: Better air quality - A dirty air filter is when dust, pollen, hair, or other debris get stuck in the filter on the inside of your A/C unit. These different types of debris will decrease the air quality in your home. If you suspect this could be happening to your A/C unit, contact our team about A/C repairs. Increases life of your unit - Keeping up with regular A/C repairs will naturally increase the amount of time your A/C unit lasts because you aren’t dragging your feet on getting issues repaired. Decreases chances of it breaking down - Being proactive with A/C repairs will decrease the likelihood of your A/C unit breaking down because you’ll be catching an issue before it gets big. Keep your energy bill low - The more diligent you are with A/C and heating repairs, the more efficient your units will be. An A/C unit or heater that needs to be repaired will not be as efficient as a system without any issues. Failure to fix issues results in your units working harder, which translates to a higher energy bill. Prevent bad air - Excess condensation within your A/C unit can result in the growth of mold. This mold could make you or anyone else living in your home sick if you don’t take care of it. Sometimes it can be hard to see mold growing in there, so it’s a good idea to just check your A/C unit regularly. If you don’t know how to check your unit, our A/C repair team can take care of it, Remain cool - No one wants their A/C unit to be blowing out warm air in the summer. If you notice yours is, contact our A/C repair team right away! We will have one of our contractors come fix it in no time at all.
